Question:

How do you raise awareness for the Welland Canals Foundation – a not-for-profit agency dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage and historical aspects of the Welland Canal - without spending valuable resources on expensive, traditional media tactics?

Answer:

You utilize new media tools, creating awareness without spending money on traditional print and television media.  Specifically, you utilize Facebook and its social networking capabilities to post news stories, photographs, and create relevant in-depth discussions with members of other marine groups.

Result:

We created a Facebook group for Welland Canals Foundation. The group page is updated regularly with relevant news and information. Group members are invited and encouraged to post photos and discussion threads related to Welland Canal, its history, and its importance to the region. Additionally, we proactively search for other marine related groups and promote the Welland Canals Foundation group through message postings on other groups’ discussion walls.
